What Qualifies as a Long-Distance Move?

What Qualifies as a Long-Distance Move With the many recent changes in the tax policies in the U.S., you might be wondering what exactly qualifies as a long-distance move for tax purposes. The IRS has parameters for determining whether or not your move will qualify for some form of exemption, and they are as follows:

  • The move has to be related to the start of a new job, in terms of both the time and place.
  • The distance between your new place of work and your old home must be 50 miles greater than the distance from your new home and your new place of work.
  • You have to work full-time hours for at least 39 weeks out of the year following the relocation.

If these conditions are met, your move will be designated as a “qualifying move” by the IRS and thus will be subject to any exemptions that might be available.
