How to Plan a Long Distance Move

How to Plan a Long Distance MoveSo you’ve decided to leave Tampa, FL, and move clear across the country—or halfway around the world. Life as you know it is about to change, but having a game plan in place will help ensure that everything goes smoothly, from big things like getting all your visas in order, to smaller things like remembering to forward your mail to your new address.

Failing to plan is planning to fail…

When planning for a long distance move, a good first step is to prioritize what needs to be done in the months leading up to your departure. That way, when moving day comes you can relax and enjoy the journey instead of sweating the last-minute details.

By 90 days out, you should:

  • Put your house/apartment on the market if you plan to sell/rent it out.
  • Start downsizing by having a garage sale or donating unwanted items.
  • Start researching moving companies.
  • Book your travel arrangements.

By 60 days out, you should:

  • Acquire any packing/moving materials you need.
  • Notify your bank that you’ll be moving. If you need an international account but they can’t offer you one, try to find a bank near your new home.
  • Check to see if any medications you take are available in your new area. If not, look into how to acquire them, or what comparable medications you might be able to take.
  • Set up a mail rerouting service with your post office.

By 30 days out, you should:

  • Begin packing, if you have not already started.
  • Make sure you are up-to-date on all your bills.
  • Ask utility companies to suspend gas, electric, water, etc. services by your moving date.

Sticking to this checklist should help you keep all your ducks in a row. And making sure these logistical concerns are addressed will give you more time to spend with your friends and family before you leave.
