Hiring Movers? Tips for Getting Your Plants Ready for Relocation

moversIf you’re hiring movers and want to bring your plants to your new home, you’ll need to take special precautions to ensure that they survive the move. Plants, like all other living things, are subject to special restrictions in how they can be moved, as according to the Household Goods Carriers’ Bureau Tariff, movers can only accept plants and other perishable items when the trip is less than 150 miles in length. Whether you move your own plants or movers handle that task for you, you’ll still need to prepare your plants for the move.

Preparing Your Plants for the Move

Taking the following precautions before the movers arrive can give your plants the best chance of surviving your upcoming move:

Three weeks before moving day

  • Repot plants that are in breakable pots (such as those made from clay or glass) to those of similar size made of plastic.

Two weeks before moving day

  • Prune larger plants so they are easier to pack and to encourage bushier, denser growth; consult a gardening guide on how to properly prune the types of plants you own.

One week before moving day

  • Check for signs of pests and, if necessary, use insecticides to eliminate them; be sure you use caution and follow all instructions on the label.

Two days before the move

  • Continue watering your plants as you normally would, taking care not to over-water in the winter (which may cause the plant to freeze) or summer (the moisture and heat may promote fungal growth).

On moving day

  • Wrap plants with old sheets or tissue to prevent the branches from breaking.
  • Place your plants into boxes that snugly hold the pots in place; punch air holes in the boxes and loosely seal the lid so your plants can still breathe.
  • Clearly mark your boxes so the movers don’t accidentally place your plants into the moving van.
  • Place your plants in your vehicle and deliver them to your new destination.
