How to Schedule Military Movers
If you’re a member of the United States military, your moving process starts with job and travel orders. Those orders will specify what you’re allowed to bring and how those items will arrive at your new location. There are two types of relocation orders – Permanent Change of Station (PCS) and Temporary Duty (TDY).
A PCS move is when you are assigned to a location for at least 20 weeks, regardless of whether your assignment pertains to training or a new job. In a PCS relocation, you should be allowed a full household move. A TDY move is when you are temporarily assigned to a new location for an extended period of time – usually more than 31 days but less than 20 weeks. Normally, for TDY moves, you’re allowed to take only a small number of household belongings with you to your new location.
Choosing How to Ship Your Items
Once you’ve determined your type of move, you can choose how your belongings are shipped. Most service members moving within the 48 contiguous states will have both an HHG (Household Goods) shipment using a government-furnished mover and a PPM (Personally-Procured Move) shipment of their prized possessions. During an HHG move, your mover is responsible for packing all of your belongings and transporting them to your new location. For a PPM move, you will be responsible for packing, unpacking, and transporting your belongings yourself, or hiring a commercial moving company.
