How to Move Cats to Another Country

Move Cats to Another Country The majority of cats do not like change. They find comfort in routine and it helps to keep them calm and happy, which is why moving can often cause cats to feel stressed. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to ensure that your cat is comfortable and safe throughout your move to another country, and to help them adjust to their new home.

Preparation

  • Allow your cat to get accustomed to its carrier by leaving it open and placing a food dish inside of it.
  • Try to facilitate a consistent routine for your cat leading up to the move, especially regarding their feeding schedule
  • Talk to your vet about anti-anxiety medication if your cat is especially skittish or nervous.
  • Check to make sure your destination country has a vet nearby, in case of emergencies

Moving

  • When the movers arrive, make sure your cat is secure in a bathroom with food, water, a bed, and litter. That way you don’t have to worry about them escaping.
  • While in transit, you will have to fight the urge to open your cat’s carrier to soothe it as this can cause a major headache if they escape
  • Try to keep your feeding schedule regular

Settling In

  • Take your cat to a quiet room where it won’t be disturbed during the unpacking process
  • Make this their “home base” for a few days, taking them out on occasion to give them a chance to adjust to all the new sights and smells
  • Keep a litter box at this “home base” but also place a second one where you ultimately want it to be
