What to pack for an international move

What to pack for an international moveSo you’ve decided to leave behind your life in Phoenix and move abroad. Your mind surges with excitement as you think of all the adventures this new chapter will bring, and then you realize you have quite a bit of work ahead of you. As you take a mental inventory of everything you own, you wonder: What should I bring with me?

Knowing what to pack for an international move will largely be determined by how long you plan to stay abroad. But regardless of the length of your trip, you will need to pack:

  • Clothing – No matter where you’re moving, or how long you’ll be there, you will need clothes. The kind of clothes you bring, however, will depend on what type of climate you are moving to.
  • Personal effects – Your computer; important documents such as your passport, visas, birth certificate; medications, hygiene products, and any other items you use on a daily basis.
  • Cherished possessions – Special blankets, family photographs, knick-knacks, or anything else you need in order to make your new place feel like home.

The following items warrant more consideration, as they may not be practical for overseas living, and transporting them will require you to hire an international moving company:

  • Electronics – Your television, DVD player, stereo, and microwave may or may not be compatible with the line voltage and frequencies in your new country.
  • Furniture – Larger items such as sectional sofas and dining room tables, which are common in the U.S., might be too big for the average home in the country you’re relocating to. Consider the size of the apartment or house you’ll be moving to, and whether it will be cheaper and more practical to buy furniture once you’re abroad.
  • Automobiles – If you know that you are going to need a vehicle to get around in your new country, it’s probably easier to bring yours rather than attempt to buy one abroad. But if the city you’re moving to has a well-established public transportation system, you may not even need a car, in which case, you might consider selling it before moving.
