How to Move Cats to Another Country
Are you looking to bring your furry feline with you to your new home country? If so, you’ll want to start preparing your cat for the move well ahead of time. You don’t want to leave the preparations to the last minute because if your cat hasn’t had the proper testing or checkups, it may not be allowed into the country. Before prepping your cat for a move, you’ll want to make sure it’s even possible and practical to bring your cat with you. You’ll want to check:
- With the country’s consulate or embassy in the United States to see if the country allows cats and – more specifically – your specific breed of cat
- If your new home or apartment will be appropriate for your cat (the apartment may not allow pets)
- If there is a veterinarian in your new town or city that can provide adequate care for your cat
- Whether you can afford paying for pet care in the new country
- If your new town or city has kennels that can watch your cat should you ever need to travel abroad again
- Whether the locals are okay with pets such as cats since local attitudes towards cats may be negative in your new country
If you’re able to bring your cat with you to your new home, you’ll then need to check with the country’s consulate or embassy to figure out what tests and vaccinations may be needed. Once you’ve learned the requirements, you’ll want to take them to a veterinarian that specializes in preparing pets for international moves to have everything done. To get your pet out of the United States, you’ll also need an international health certificate from the Department of Agriculture (USDA) filled out by an accredited veterinarian and endorsed by the one of the USDA’s veterinary services area offices. When everything is ready to go, you’ll just need to find a pet carrier for your cat that’s acceptable for your airplane.
