How to Pack Glassware for a Long Distance Move

How to Pack Glassware for a Long Distance Move When it comes time to pack your glassware for your move abroad, you’ll want to spend some time making sure that it’s done in a way that will keep your items safe from cracking and breaking. It’ll be a long trip via airfreight or ground shipping from Denver, so you’ll have to package them with this in mind. If packaged well, you can have peace of mind during your trip that your glasses will make it safely to your new home location.

For your packing supplies, you’ll want to gather medium-sized boxes, packing paper, newsprint, and towels or another type of soft material. A medium-sized box is recommended over a large box because a large box with glassware can become heavy and difficult to carry. You can also try getting divided boxes from a liquor store as these types of boxes will provide more protection. With your supplies on hand, following these steps will help ensure your glassware is securely package:

  • Crumble sheets of your packing paper and lay them out at the bottom of the box to provide cushioning for the glasses.
  • Wrap each piece of glass by rolling them in foam sheets, which can be found at many hardware stores, and stuff the ends into the glass to ensure that it’s completely covered. Paper and towels can also be used to wrap your glasses, but foam sheets are ideal.
  • Wrap the stems of any glasses such as wine glasses with packing paper.
  • Place the heaviest glasses at the bottom and put the lighter ones on top of them, leaving room at the top of each box for the same amount of packing material that you placed at the bottom of the box.
  • Gently shake the box to hear if there is any clicking sounds, which would indicate that some glassware isn’t fully wrapped.
  • If everything sounds good, seal your box tightly with packing tape and label it, including “Fragile” on the box.
